How to Calculate a Discount and Find the Final Price
Walking through a shopping mall or browsing an e-commerce website, you frequently see banners announcing "30% off today!" or "Take an extra 15% off at checkout." Knowing how to calculate that discount in your head—or with a quick digital tool—ensures you know exactly what you are paying before reaching the payment terminal.
The Two Formulas for Discounts
You can approach a discount in two straightforward ways:
Method 1: Find the Savings First
Savings = Original Price × (Discount % ÷ 100)
Final Price = Original Price - Savings
Method 2: Find the Remaining Percentage Directly
If an item is 30% off, you are paying the remaining 70% of its value (100% - 30% = 70%):
Final Price = Original Price × ((100 - Discount %) ÷ 100)
Step-by-Step Shopping Example
Suppose you find a winter coat with an original sticker price of $140.00. The rack displays a 35% discount tag.
- Step 1: Calculate the savings:
$140.00 × (35 ÷ 100) = $140.00 × 0.35 = $49.00 savings. - Step 2: Calculate the checkout price:
$140.00 - $49.00 = $91.00 final price.
You save $49.00 and pay $91.00 for the coat.
Don't Forget Sales Tax
In jurisdictions where sales tax is not included on sticker tags, tax is almost always assessed on the discounted final price ($91.00 in our example), not the original $140.00.
