How to Calculate Your Age in Years, Months, and Days

Most of the time, when someone asks how old you are, answering in whole years is sufficient. But for official administrative filings, pediatric healthcare milestones, legal certifications, or milestone celebrations, knowing your exact age in years, months, and elapsed days is necessary.

Why Exact Age Calculation Is Tricky

Calculating age isn't as simple as dividing total days by 365.25. The Gregorian calendar has irregular features:

  • Months have varying lengths: February has 28 or 29 days; April, June, September, and November have 30 days; and the remaining seven months have 31 days.
  • Leap years occur every 4 years, except for century years that cannot be evenly divided by 400.
  • Because months vary in length, "one month" is not a fixed number of days—it depends entirely on which month of the year you are measuring.

The Chronological Subtraction Method

To calculate exact age by hand:

  1. Write today's date in Year-Month-Day order.
  2. Write the birth date beneath it in the same format.
  3. Subtract the days first. If today's day is smaller than the birth day, "borrow" a month from the months column (adding the exact number of days in the preceding month).
  4. Subtract the months. If today's month is smaller than the birth month, borrow 1 year (12 months) from the years column.
  5. Subtract the years.

Practical Worked Example

Suppose someone was born on June 20, 1998, and we are determining their age on October 15, 2026.

  • Days: 15 is smaller than 20. Borrow 1 month from October (September has 30 days).
    15 + 30 = 45 days. Now subtract: 45 - 20 = 25 days.
  • Months: Having borrowed a month, October (10) is now September (9).
    Subtract: 9 - 6 = 3 months.
  • Years: Subtract the years: 2026 - 1998 = 28 years.

As of October 15, 2026, the person is exactly 28 years, 3 months, and 25 days old.
